Based in downtown Boston, Massachusetts, the Boston Bruins are a professional men's ice hockey team. They are a part of the Northeast Division in the Eastern Conference of the National Hockey League (NHL). The organization has been in existence since 1924 when it entered the league as the first American based expansion team. The team's home arena, the TD Banknorth Garden, has a capacity of 17,565 and is where home games have been played since 1995. Before the TD Banknorth Garden, the team had played at the Boston Garden since 1928.
The Bruins have won the Stanley Cup five times but currently have the longest drought (36 years) out of any Boston sports organization for winning a title. In only their fifth year as an organization, they captured their first Cup in 1929. With a very strong team in the late 30’s and early 40’s the B’s won titles in 1939 and again in 1941. The team was strong again in the early 1970’s when they would go on to win two more titles in 1970 and 1972. The 1970 Stanley Cup featured one of the most historic goals of all time by Bobby Orr, the Bruins captain, when he went sailing through the air in overtime to deflect a shot in the net to win the team’s most recent championship.
The 2009 Bruins finished at the top of the standings by the end of the season with a 53-19 record. They advanced past the Canadiens in the opening round but fell short of the Carolina Hurricanes in Game 7 of the Conference Semifinals. Last season the B’s found themselves back in the semi’s, where they were eventually defeated by their longtime rival Philadelphia Flyers. In the 2010-11 campaign, the Bruins had an exciting playoffs all the way through, first beating the Montreal Canadiens, then the Philadelphia Flyers, followed by the Tampa Bay Lightning, and finally the Vancouver Canucks for the Stanley Cup Championship. This season, the Bruins are once again in first place and looking to make it a repeat year.
